Git is a tool that remembers your code.
Git is a distributed version control system that tracks changes in files over time.

In simple words:

  • Git keeps a history of your code

  • Git lets you undo mistakes

Git Basics & Core Terminologies (Simple Language)

1. Repository (Repo)

Think of a repository as a box that contains:

  • Your project files

  • Git’s memory of all changes

Folder + Git tracking = Repository


2. Commit

A commit is like taking a photo of your project.

  • You finish some work

  • You tell Git: “Save this version”

  • Git stores it forever

Each photo = one commit


3. Branch

A branch is like a separate path.

  • Main branch = original road

  • New branch = try new ideas safely

If it works → merge it
If it fails → delete it

No damage to the main road


4. HEAD

HEAD is Git’s way of saying:

“This is where you are right now”

It points to the latest commit you’re working on.

1. git init

Starts Git in your project

git init

Turns a normal folder into a Git repository.


2. git status

Asks Git: “What’s happening?”

git status

Shows:

  • Which files changed

  • Which files are staged

  • What Git is waiting for


3. git add

Tells Git what to save

git add index.html

or everything:

git add .

Moves files to the staging area


4. git commit

Saves the snapshot

git commit -m "Added homepage layout"

Always write a clear message like telling a story.


5. git log

Shows project history

git log

Displays:

  • All commits

  • Who made them

  • When they were made

A Basic Developer Workflow (From Scratch)

Let’s imagine you start a new project today.

Step 1: Create project

mkdir my-project
cd my-project
git init

Step 2: Create a file

index.html

Write some code.


Step 3: Check status

git status

Git says: “I see new files!”


Step 4: Add files

git add .

Step 5: Commit

git commit -m "Initial project setup"
